What causes colds?
All colds are caused by viruses. Cold, wet winter weather, being stressed or run down can make it easier for a cold to develop, but for that to happen there has to be a cold virus there in the first place.
Is it Ok to use Vicks First Defence solutions if I’m pregnant or breast-feeding?
If you’re pregnant or breast-feeding we recommend that you talk to your doctor before using the nasal spray. The hand foam is perfectly safe to use. Please read the downloadable leaflets carefully for more information.
How to use Vicks First Defence Micro-Gel Nasal Spray:
Start to use when you feel the first signs of a cold, before a full blown cold has a chance to develop.
Adults and children (12 years & older):
Without tilting head, apply 2-3 sprays per nostril 4 times a day and avoid inhaling deeply.
Vicks First Defence Micro-Gel Nasal Spray Contains:
Aqua, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (based on plant extracts), Succinic Acid, Disodium Succinate, PCA, Phenethyl alcohol, Zinc EDTA, Zinc Acetate, Polysorbate 80, Aroma: (Menthol, Camphor, Eucalyptol), Sodium Saccharin.
Cautions whilst taking Vicks First Defence Micro-Gel Nasal Spray:
Not suitable for children under 12 years of age.
Allow 4 hours between applications, no more than 4 applications in 24 hours.For best results continue to use for 48 hours after symptoms subside. Use only as directed.Do not use this container for more than one person; it may spread infection.For nasal use only.
See your doctor before using this product if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- have nose, ear or throat sensitivities.
- are susceptible to nose bleeds.
Consult your pharmacist or doctor if:
- after 7 days your cold is still present.
- symptoms worsen or are accompanied by fever.
In the case of accidental contact with eyes, flush with water and seek medical advice straight away.
When using First Defence it is normal to experience increased nasal discharge and a temporary stinging or smarting sensation.
Store upright. Do not store above 25°C. Keep out of direct sunlight. Do not use this product after the expiry date on the carton or bottle. Keep out of reach of children.

We learned of this product while in the UK, and find that if used promptly (at the first symptoms of a cold), it stops the cold in its tracks, or at least makes it much less severe. As more homeopathic (than pharmaceutical), we (my wife and I) are extremely pleased - enough that we order it from overseas. Apparently, Vicks only makes this available out of the UK or Germany - not in the US. ..

Excellent service from Chemistdirect site- very easy to order and receive the product. I couldn't find something similar in Greece and I'm happy a friend recommended Vicks first defence and chemist direct :) ..

When you get the 'tingle' in your nose - a sure indication that a cold is on its way - I've found that by using Vicks First Defence Micro-Gel Nasal Spray it does not develop into a full cold (just a tingly nose for a couple of days). Anything that stops you getting that horrible runny and sore nose has got to be worth it! ..

I read a report where a professor from the Common Cold Unit at a northern university rated the nasal spray as an 'exciting development' in the fight against the common cold. A bit sceptical, I bought one when I startied showing symptoms of a cold and used the spray as described. The result was the cold came to nothing!
This may be a fluke, but I am now determined to use this product whenever I start a cold. Also, my 25yr old son - a perpetual cold-catcher (and generous giver to others) - had a sore throat. We immediately got him on to First Defence and the cold has not developed at all. Amazing. ..
