Your infant may need a little outside help with a well-timed suppository. As they are going through a phase of learning how to have a bowel movement, many babies in their early months grunt and draw up their legs to push out a stool. But the straining baby may appreciate a little outside help with a well-timed, well-placed glycerin suppository. Available without prescription at your pharmacy, these look like tiny rocket ships. If your baby is straining, insert one as far into the rectum as you can and hold baby's buttocks together for a few minutes to dissolve the glycerin. These are especially helpful to lubricate the rectum if baby has a rectal tear or bleeding . Don't use for more than a few days without your doctor's advice

This is the quickest and safest way to relieve constipation in infants (a common problem, I know from experience!) It's also the best choice for parents of frequently constipated (or "regularly irrregular") babies, because there are no side-effects, and they're less dependency-forming than any oral laxative. For two reasons: they're local in their effect (they're inserted up the bum, after all); furthermore, where most laxatives are stimulant-irritants that affect the entire digestive system (and are mostly not suitable for infants, as a result), these work by osmosis, drawing fluid into the rectum, simultaneously lubricating the excrement and stimulating the baby to expel it. In other words, when you have a cranky constipated baby in the house, pop one of these in her and she'll do a doodoo in 5-20 minutes! ..
