FAQs about Cholesterol

Nowadays it seems every doctor has advised people that they should keep their stress levels to a minimum and now it has been found that increased stress itself can lead to high cholesterol and consequently a high risk of heart trouble.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is made in the liver but is unable to dissolve in the blood. It needs to be transported both to and from the cells by carriers called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as "bad" cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as "good" cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein together (along with other substances), can form a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries making them less flexible, resulting in hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and can lead to a heart attack or stroke. High-density lipoprotein HDL cholesterol is known as "good" cholesterol, because high levels of HDL seem to protect against heart attack.

Cholesterol & Stress

It is speculated that stress hormones (which primarily act in reaction to a fear inducing situation), help to generate a lot of energy. If this energy is not used up properly, it ends up being jammed in some part of the body as extra fat. In addition to this, Cortisol is also capable of speeding up the creation of sugar in human body which acts as a source of instant energy for human body.

Today, people tend to lead a very stressful life. In such a condition, their body generates a lot of sugar but it remains unused. This extra sugar has to be stored somewhere so the body converts it into either fatty acids or in some cases into triglycerides. These substances require the liver to produce and secrete more LDL, which is the principal carrier of cholesterol in the blood. According to current theories, the deposit of fat primarily takes place in the abdomen area and if you have a lot of fat in abdomen area, you are much more prone to getting heart problems.

So what can you do to lower your LDL levels?

To help reduce your cholesterol levels, you need to cut down on saturated fats and trans fats and then replace them with monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. You should also reduce the total amount of fat you consume. You could cut them down by:

  • Replacing saturated fats like butter, lard, ghee and coconut and palm oils with small amounts of unsaturated fats such as olive oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower or corn oil.
  • Using spreads like olive, sunflower or soya in place of butter, as these types of spreads have the least amount of saturated fats. They are also higher in the unsaturated fats, which are healthier for your heart. But remember to still use only a little bit, as they are still high in calories.
  • Using nutrition labels on packs to help you to choose the foods lowest in fat and saturated fat. Even if the packaging on a product makes it look healthy, get used to checking for yourself to be sure.  There should be no more than 3g or less of fat per 100g for a product to be low in fat and 1.5g or less of saturated fat for it to be low in saturates.

Eat oily fish regularly - Oily fish provides the richest source of a particular type of polyunsaturated fat known as omega-3 fats which can help to lower blood triglyceride levels and also helps prevent the blood from clotting, and help to regulate the heart rhythm.

Eat a high-fibre diet - Foods that are high in 'soluble fibre' such as porridge, beans, pulses, lentils, nuts, fruits and vegetables, can help lower cholesterol. Please see our information on fibre.

Doing regular physical activity can help increase your HDL cholesterol (the 'protective' type of cholesterol).

BBC NEWS: Is it a good idea to measure stress?

It's summer and many people are planning a stress-relieving trip, while for many parents the school holidays are themselves a stressful time. But are we close to having a way for people to measure their own stress levels, and is this a good idea?

Mitesh Soma, founder of Chemist Direct, is selling an executive stress kit containing monitors for blood pressure, body fat and cholesterol, and a pedometer, costing 100.

Soma's firm sells about a hundred a week. The former City worker came up with the idea after talking to ex-colleagues about health worries over long hours.

....stress kits can help people see what impact their lifestyle is having on their health and make appropriate adjustments.

Lynda Spain, a stress management consultant in Manchester, agrees that it's important to identify someone's stress level. Once she knows how stressed a client is she can take the next step and address it with cognitive behaviour therapy or other techniques.
