Daktarin Oral Gel

Daktarin Oral Gel is an effective mouth infection treatment medicine which is used to prevent and treat fungal and bacterial infections of the mouth and throat. The gel contains miconazole which works by destroying the fungus and associated bacteria which may be present. This medicine is for adults, infants and children aged 4 months and over.

Daktarin is an effective and pleasant tasting mouth infection treatment, that soothes irritation and burning sensations of the mouth and gums. It also works to clear and prevent further outbreaks of mouth infections.

What is Miconazole?

Daktarin Sugar free 2% Oral Gel contains the active ingredient miconazole. Miconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat infections with fungi and yeasts. Miconazole kills fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes.

How does it work?

It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol disrupts the fungal cell membrane, causing it to disappear.

How to take Daktarin Oral Gel:

• Adults should take 1-2 spoonfuls of gel 4 times a day, held in the mouth for as long as possible in the case of oropharyngeal infestations.
• Children under 2 years should have half a spoonful of gel twice daily.
• 2-6 years should have 1 spoonful of gel twice daily.
• 6 years and above should have1 spoonful of gel 4 times daily.
• Oropharynx: hold gel in the mouth for as long as possible. Continue for 2 days after clearance.
• Daktarin oral gel should be taken after eating and held in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing.

Daktarin Oral Gel contains:

Miconazole base 2% w/w, pregelatinised potato starch, alcohol polysorbate 20, sodium saccharin, cocoa flavour, orange flavour, glycerol, water.

Possible side effects when using Daktarin Oral Gel:

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. • Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea

Caution when using Daktarin Oral Gel:

• Daktarin oral gel is sticky. You should be careful to ensure that the gel doesn't obstruct the throat, as this may cause choking, particularly in children. The gel should not be put at the back of the throat, and the prescribed dose may be divided into smaller portions.
• If you have false teeth (dentures) and are treating oral thrush you should brush the gel onto your dentures after you take them out at night to kill any fungus that may be on the dentures.
• Treatment with this medicine should be continued for two days after the symptoms have cleared up to ensure the infection is fully treated and prevent it from coming back.
• Take at regular intervals.
• Complete the prescribed course unless otherwise directed.
