Frequently Asked Questions
1. How can you sell this item for so much less than my local chemist?
We keep our overheads to a minimum, ensure the margins added are fair and work on larger sale volumes than a local chemist. All these measures provide major cost saving benefits to the consumer. Our prices on this medication are based on the non branded version of Ibugel. Ibugel's active ingredient is 5% Ibuprofen which actually provides the desired effects.
2. Does your medication give me the same effect as the branded version?
Absolutely. When a pharmaceutical company develops a drug it is given unique rights to sell it for a number of years. Once that ends any company can make it providing they meet the regulations. Therefore, over the counter drugs have identical medical properties regardless of brand, packaging and advertising.
The key is the active' ingredient - the chemical that actually treats the symptom. Protections and quality control apply equally to all branded and non branded products. The non branded product must meet the same quality standards as the branded version. Packaging may vary, but the items are identical and the results will be the same.
Dr. Chris Steele GP, the resident Doctor on ITV1's This Morning agrees:
The key is the active ingredient. Look on the brand you know, note the active ingredient and then check it's the same one at the same dose as the generic brand."
How to use 5% Ibuprofen Gel:
- Apply the gel to the affected areas, up to three times daily, or as directed by the physician.
- On each occasion apply only enough gel to thinly cover the affected area, and gently massage well into the skin, until completely absorbed.
- Do not use excessively.
- Hands should be washed immediately after use (unless treating them).
- Treatment should not normally continue for more than a few weeks, unless recommended to do so by a doctor.
- The same dosage and dosage schedule applies to all age groups, although 5% Ibuprofen gel is not normally recommended for use on children under the age of 12 years, unless instructed by their doctor.
The active ingredient is:
Ibuprofen EP 5.0% w/w.
Side effects of 5% Ibuprofen Gel:
Very rarely, susceptible patients may experience the following side effects with ibuprofen, but these are extremely uncommon when ibuprofen is administered topically. If they occur, treatment should be discontinued:-
Hypersensitivity: hypersensitivity reactions have been reported following treatment with ibuprofen. These may consist of (a) non-specific allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, (b) respiratory tract reactivity comprising asthma, aggravated asthma, bronchospasm, or dyspnoea, or (c) assorted skin disorders, including rashes of various types, pruritus, urticaria, purpura, angioedema and, less commonly, bullous dermatoses (including epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme).
Renal: renal impairment can occur in patients with a history of kidney problems.
Gastrointestinal: side effects such as abdominal pain and dyspepsia (indigestion or stomach upset) have been reported.
Warnings of 5% Ibuprofen Gel:
Not to be used in cases of sensitivity to any of the ingredients, particularly if asthmatic or suffer from allergic disease, and have previously shown hypersensitivity to aspirin, ibuprofen or related painkillers. Not to be used on broken skin or eyes.
Seek medical advice if symptoms worsen or persist. Oral NSAIDs, including ibuprofen, can sometimes be associated with renal impairment, aggravation of active peptic ulcers, and can induce allergic bronchial reactions in susceptible asthmatic patients.
Although the systemic absorption of topically applied ibuprofen is less than for oral dosage forms, these complications can occur in rare cases. For these reasons, patients with an active peptic ulcer, a history of kidney problems, asthma or intolerance to aspirin or ibuprofen taken orally should seek medical advice before using ibuprofen gel.
Keep Ibuprofen gel away from the eyes and mucous membranes. For external use only.
You should carefully read all product packaging and labels prior to use.

Works well, I use it on my back but it makes a sticky mess and takes a while to dry, wouldn't be practical to put on an area covered by clothing as it just soaks into the material and you end up having to peel it off your back ..

Very pleased with the 5% Ibuprofen Gel and the service from Chemist Direct. Tried everywhere else to get a tube of the gel, but found it here. I was warned off using the tablets/capsules as they increase the risk of stomach ulcers, so this product is ideal. ..

The formulation of Ibuprofen Gel is the same ibuprofen strength as all their other products. The price is astonishingly low compared to even the cheapest generic product available over the counter.
A long term muscular problem affecting my walking has responded remarkably well to Phorpain, to the great satisfaction of my medically qualified practising osteopath who had recommended I try ibuprophen gel which I have regularly applied with deep massage.
He recommends I continue to use this as long as I need to - which will be 'as required' from now on, and from Chemist Direct, of course. ..

I use Ibruproen gel on my knee. I have patella tendonitis that can flare up with very little physical strain. The gel soothes the muscles and tendon and makes a big difference. Using a gel is so much more effective than tablets I think. The menthol immediately soothes and the pain messages are block. Works a treat. ..
